Family History Research Fees

The first thing I usually get asked when people contact me is “How much will it cost to find out ……?”

The answer usually is “I don’t know until I’ve looked at the project in more detail” it might be easy or what you are looking for may be hard to find.

Some things are hard to find

So I need to start work pretty much straight away; catching up with and verifying the research you may have already done to get a feel of what will be required and how long something is likely to take. I can only forecast how long things will take as this depends on record availability as well as numerous other things. Sometimes research takes hardly any time at all but sometimes I might not find anything at all, usually things fall somewhere in between.

So what I tend to do is give an outline of the first steps to be taken and agree a budget for doing those, then once I’ve found a bit more out we can agree the next stage depending on those findings. This might seem a bit vague but Family History research is not an exact science! Were you’re ancestors trying not to be found? Did they always use the same name, age and place of birth? What records exist for the place and time period you want me to research? There are many variables.

My general research fees are as follows:

  • Hourly rate – £20.00 per hour
  • Half day (4 hours) – £75.00
  • Full day (8 hours) – £140.00
  • Expenses: all travel, certificate costs, printing, photography, photocopying and other expenses will be added at cost

Please note; I charge for research time even though I may not find what you want. Looking for something that isn’t there can take a considerable time!

The best thing to do is get in touch and describe your research requirement, we can discuss how to go about it and set a budget for the work together.
