Family History Research in York

I am based in York so have a number of Record offices, archives and reference facilities on my doorstep.

York Explore – contains York’s City Archives which holds York’s civic records including manorial records, solicitors client’s records, business and other records covering 800 years of life in York.

Borthwick InsituteThe Borthwick Institute – The largest archive outside London this holds the parish records for the modern Archdeaconry of York, marriage bonds dating from 1660, probate records from the late 14th century to 1858 and much more.

York Local History Research RoomYork Family & Local History Collection – Also now within York Explore this contains York and Yorkshire newspapers and periodicals, historical maps, marriage indexes 1539 -1837, Parish registers for York and Yorkshire, poll books and electoral registers, York City directories, trade directories and much more.

York Family History Research RoomYork Family History Society Research Room – this offers a myriad of sources to records for both York and Yorkshire, including an amazing set of CDs containing monumental inscriptions from the graves of many of the churches in and around York.

The "Search Engine" at The National Railway Museum, YorkNational Railway Museum – within the museum is an excellent archive and research room (known as “The Search Engine”) which holds various records of railway employees.

I can carry out family history research for you at any of these without charging any travel expenses because they are all a short bicycle ride away!

I charge £20.00 per hour (minimum 1 hour), £75 for a half day (4 hours) or £140 for a full day. Additional expenses for printing, photocopying, photography etc are not included so will be added at cost.
