York is situated at the very centre of Yorkshire and so the majority of places are only a short journey away.
The major record offices are:
- North Yorkshire County Record Office – based in Northallerton, hold millions of documents all shapes, sizes and ages which can be used to obtain information for many personal, legal, administrative and historical purposes.
- East Riding of Yorkshire Archives Sevice – based in Beverley, they look after over 6,000 metres of shelves with documents and printed local studies material from the 12th century to the present day.
- West Yorkshire County Records Office – has its headquarters in Wakefield, and offices in Bradford, Calderdale (Halifax), Kirklees (Huddersfield), and Leeds.
- Hull also has a city archives while Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham archives all serve what is now South Yorkshire.
All these record offices are only a short distance from York by car or train and so expenses are kept to a minimum.
I charge £15.00 per hour (2 hours minimum), £50 for a half-day (4 hours) or £90 for a full day plus any expenses for travel, printing, photocopying etc. I’ll provide a full invoice with my report.
